The Joint Market Monitoring Committee, Kailali, has seized 10,000 kilogramme of mangoes from different shops and stores in Dhangadi after they were found to have being ripened using carbide, an inedible element. The mangoes seized by the Committee are worth Rs. 600,000 in the local market. The Committee monitored the market following complaints from various quarters about the use of chemicals to artificially ripen mangoes being sold in the local market, said Sanjeev Kumar Karna, Senior Food Research Officer at the Regional Food Technology and Quality Control Office, Dhangdhi.
They seized the mangoes after the public complaint was found to be true, said Karna.During the monitoring, the Committee seized mangoes from Afjal Ahmed, Gaddu Ansari, Bikash Shah, Surya Chandra, Bhojraj Bohra and Sanjeeet Shahs fruit shops and stores. The Food Act has a provision of a fine of Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000 and three-year imprisonment or both for selling inedible food items.
