Jhapa, July 8: Hospitals in Jhapa district have been facing a shortage of anti-snake venom though a large number of people are coming for treatment of snake bite in the ongoing summer season. Durga Bhattarai, Chairman of the Snake-bite Treatment Centre in Charali, said the stock of the anti-snake venom is almost over. Treatment of people suffering a snake-bite will not be possible after a month as the stock of 100 vials of the anti-snake venom will be hardly sufficient for this month, said Chairman Bhattarai. The Centre needs around 400-800 vials anti-snake venom in a year. The government supplies anti-snake vials to snake-bite treatment centers and government hospitals.
Bhattarai said, "We have informed the public health office and government bodies concerned regarding the shortage of the anti-snake venom. They just responded saying that the problem is same across the country." The centre used 37 vials anti-snake venom within 19 days in the month of Ashad and 60 vials in Jestha. A person bitten by a poisonous snake will require as much as 35 vials of anti-snake venom for treatment.
