Prime Minister Sushil Koirala had inaugurated the conference while Myanmars democratic icon Aang San Suu Kyi and exponents of social democracy including Luis Ayala, Prof Dr Thomas Meyer, Dr Bhol and Prof Ananda Kumar had delivered their speeches.
Making public the Declaration, Academy Chairperson Haribol Bhattarai said the global economic crisis and subsequent situation have substantiated the downfall of neo-liberal economic paradigm that largely influenced the world market economy since 1980.
The conference had endorsed a thought that social democracy is the future wave and the time has tested the paradigm, Chairperson Bhattarai noted.
He added the conference had taken civil and political rights including freedom of expression and opinion, right to participate in free and fair election and right to association as pre-requisite conditions of social democracy and it believes on equal economic opportunities.
Among other charters of the declaration include expanding governments role to mobilize social organizations and civil society, increase social responsibility of the corporate sector, promote fraternity, reconciliation and sustainable peace.
The declaration has stated that the participatory rapid development with distribution-based equality is the purpose of the social democracy stressing that the state should accept multi-culturalism. The document has also stressed the prevalence of political culture that facilitates reconciliation among political trade union, civil society, middle class and intelligentsia.
Likewise, the declaration underscores the need to adopt all-inclusive state policy and public welfare-oriented market structure and regulation.
Speaking at the programme, Academy general secretary Devendra Prakash Poudel and member duo Pradip Koirala and Puspha Parajuli said the international conference has provided guideline to the future course of social democracy in Nepal. RSS
