Kathmandu, July 16: Demand has been made for constituting a high-level freed Kamaiyas rehabilitation commission. Freed Kamaiyas in Nepal are former bonded labourers who had been trapped in landlords’ houses for many years for domestic works with no or minimal payment. The Freed Kamaiyas Rehabilitation Monitoring Struggle Committee has, through a press meet here today, called for forming a commission to identify real problems facing the freed Kamaiyas and addressing them. It has sought proper rehabilitation of freed Kamaiyas, Rs. 10,000 cash and 74 cubic feet of timber to each freed Kamaiya for the construction of shelter and fertile land to them.

 

The committee has complained that the government has provided uncultivable land to them. Lawmaker Dilli Bahadur Chaudhary who was present in the programme said freed still are waiting for their proper rehabilitation though it has been 14 hours the government has announced the abolition of Kamaiya system from the country. Committee Chairperson Bintiram Tharu demanded guarantee of state facilities including health, education and housing to and urged the government to freed Kamaiyas and their families. He urged the government to execute agreements reached with freed Kamaiyas at different times.
